Sacha’s Las Perlas Dress
I’ll never forget the moment I read Sacha’s initial email to me when she said she was interested in wearing a dress by me at her Island wedding.
The last sentence of the email read: “The wedding is in the ‘Las Perlas’ islands, where the pirates/conquistadors used to count their pearls before bringing them back to Spain, so I'd like to play around with incorporating pearls into the design somehow!” Her wedding theme was described as “Disco Pirate.” I mean… if that’s not the most exciting inspiration for a crochet wedding gown, I don’t know what is.
I knew Sacha was going to be cool but when this artistic modelesque mega babe walked through my door for her fitting, I was taken back. YOU want ME to make YOUR wedding dress?! It almost didn’t seem real. We clicked right away and had a great time talking about burning man, art, travel, and fashion.
We tried on a bunch of my samples- everything looked good on her, of course. But we narrowed it down to a combination of my designs that would make up her perfect dress. Here are the elements: The skirt of the Edith Dress with an off-center high slit and a long ruffled train. For the top, we went with the Lotus Top design and added the Angel Dress drape. The most important and exciting element of this dress is that it was going to be DRENCHED IN PEARLS. We decided that the top, back drape, skirt slip, and train were going to be heavily beaded with dangling pearls.
The dress design came flying from my fingers. I was so inspired by Sacha’s vision that I wanted to get working on it right away. She came back for a second fitting and once the base of the dress was finalized, it was time to add the pearls. I went to Bohemian Crystal in the LA Fashion District to find her an abundance of dangling pearls. What’s funny is that Sacha had already given me a huge bag of pearls but we needed MORE!
We sent photos and videos back and forth for inspiration and Sacha kept me updated on her DIY wedding decor that involved lots of disco balls, strung beads, and fishnets. I loved getting to know her and always fell more in love with her as a person every time we spoke. She even invited me to come to her sister’s very posh art show in Hollywood and it was an amazing and inspiring night.
After we were satisfied with the amount of beading and the fit of the dress was perfected, I sent Sacha off to Panama with her gorgeous dress and a little indica joint in her Thank You card ;)
I am not at all surprised that Sacha’s wedding photos are absolutely stunning but I don’t think I was prepared for them to be THIS stunning!!
Ana Hinojosa captured the magic of the day so beautifully with her masterful photography. The artful details are so creative and one of a kind. Sasha and Matt’s ceremony was on the beach under a beautiful bamboo and palm branch alter. The guests were exquisitely dressed and brought all their love as they sat on cushions in the sand sending their blessings to the lovers.
The photos of the party seem surreal. The guests were stunningly and artfully dressed and everyone came prepared to have a good time. Here are a few snaps that particularly stood out to me but believe me when I say it was hard to narrow down which moments to share.
Sasha followed up her wedding gown with two more looks throughout the night- both of them stunning and so much fun.
It is absolutely apparent that Sacha and Matt are madly in love. The way they looked at each other, kissed, and even played together in their photos is enough to make your heart flutter. It seemed that all the beautiful details, intentions, and planning all came down to their love. At the end of the day that is the last standing thing.
